About
What is this blog about?
In case you’ve stumbled here in a Google fog, my name is Lindsey Tallman and this is my personal blog for the Social Media and Social Networking course at Santa Barbara City College. The plan this semester is to fill this little piece of internet with thoughts that come to me from course readings, tool testing, personal experiences, and good ol’ exploratory fun on the world wide web. Rest assured I’ll be posing questions also, and I hope readers will jump in with their own opinions, answers, or mutual confusion.
Who am I?
I am the less furry creature in the picture below:

I’m 24-years-old and currently reside in Sacramento, California. I have been attached to a computer since the days of Quake which according to Wikipedia came out in 1996. My love of video games led me to online communities which quickly opened up a whole new world of player tricks, player-created maps, and gaming leagues for me to enjoy. All of this shared content fascinated me and I eventually began to contribute also. As a result of all these experiences, I not only have a network of friends that spans the globe, but I have an immense interest in all things that enable increased collaboration on the internet. On a more personal note, I suffer from what is known as Social Anxiety, and I honestly don’t know what I would have done if the internet didn’t exist as it has played a large role in what social life I do have and allows me to participate and communicate with those of similar interests.
In a nutshell- I’m a BIG fan of social media and social networking.
When I’m not on the computer, I am usually at my local indoor soccer arena. I have played soccer for almost sixteen years now, but even though I currently only play indoor, I still dedicate four nights of the week to being at the arena and play on two teams. I am also a fan of reading, video games (in case you missed that earlier), gardening, and anything design related. As for school, I have a BS in Graphic Design on hiatus at California State University, Sacramento with a minor in Art History, an AS in Small Business Management in progress at Los Rios community colleges (I have some entrepreneurial desires), and I am one course away from an AS in Health Information Technology here at SBCC. I’m quite interested in how social media and networking can be potentially used in the health fields. Last but not least, I am a weekly volunteer for Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary which is a no-kill pet shelter, and as I type this, my own cat Colors has rendered my left hand unusable. That, by the way, is not Colors in my picture. I’m sure she’ll be “helping” me quite often over the next couple of weeks…
So where can you find me and perhaps a picture of Colors?
As I’ve gotten busy with school, my internet participation has dwindled but I do enjoy:
- Facebook- Initially I was a Myspace girl and although I had a Facebook account back when it was for college students only, I never used it. Like many though, I have switched over exclusively to Facebook. It has been great over the past year now that a lot of my family has joined. Initially I let out a groan when friend requests started rolling in from aunts and uncles because I had some idea in my head that their presence would somehow cramp my style, but it turns out I love knowing what they are eating for breakfast. I also enjoy some of the social gaming aspects of the site.
- Goodreads and LibraryThing - More so Goodreads than the other, but these two are great sites for those who enjoy reading. Not only do I use it to keep track of my personal library but I can record my page progress and share it on my Facebook profile page. My favorite social aspect though is the groups and their monthly book selections/read-a-longs.
- Ravelry- This is a social network for fiber lovers. If you knit, crochet, or spin and haven’t heard of this website then you need to clear the next few hours of your schedule and go there right now. If you’re curious, the username is knitophile.
- Twitter- I do have an account but honestly don’t use it much as none of my friends do. I’d like to utilize it better in the future though.
- Kaboodle- Social shopping.
- 1Up and GamerDNA- Video games.
- MyAnimeList - I probably wouldn’t have ever discovered my love for anime or manga if it weren’t for this community.
- DailyBurn - Fitness networking.
