To Everybody:
Just so you know… There is an inconsistency between Namechk and Twitter. Nanechk is inaccurate regarding twitter. Twitter has a 15 character limit. Namechk incorrectly shows Twitter acceptability for names over 15 charters. KnowEm is OK.

John Bruce wrote a new blog post: Social Media: Force in the Future. 2 months, 2 weeks ago
Despite some personal uncomfort with some aspects of social media it is my option that it is a c-change in the internet. Social Media and the supporting technological change of cloud computing is changing many of the fundamentals of the internet. But equally or even more important is the change in us. The computer (social [...]

I hadn’t thought of GPS in relation to Social Media but after reading Daemon, I saw how GPS gets drawn into the social media concept by presence of mobile internet devices. So while I was thinking of the internet downlink, I was overlooking the uplink of some very basic and important information. A GPS signel [...]

Matthew Sabol, the creator of the Daemon… “I suspect that democracy is not viable in a technological advanced society.” The idea of an intelligent self-sustaining computer system threatening human existence is a common science fiction topic. This book combined exciting action with cutting edge technology producing an entertaining read. But more interesting to me is [...]

Based on our readings, social media’s time has come. I believe that to be true. But, as they say, the proof is in the pudding. The technical definition of Web 2.0 stresses that “the web is a platform” has massive repercussions. The idea that information use rather than software availability will lead the way is inspiring but it is also a huge change in the business model. That software itself might be resident in the cloud is even a more massive change in paradigm. The total turn over of power to the cloud is a little scary not only to business but also to me when I think of passing ownership of my personal data to the cloud.
On social media itself, the social networking potential is immense and as stated in our reading the sheer magnitude of interactions will undoubtedly change things. Also the fact that data is data to the net will resulted in the rise of the interrelation of text, picture, video and audio data. This might well be a major evolutionary transition in the use information. I am reminded of Marshall McLuhan who foresaw so many of the shifts in information and its uses. “The medium is the message” was his principle insight. He elaborated this saying stating that “Everybody experiences far more than he understands.. It is experience, rather than understanding, that influences behavior.” Big changes are coming… Baby…
In this turning of the wheel, it would appear that we might be seeing a shift of power back to the originator of information. Or are we? Is it just that the power will now be held by the owners of data rather makers of software. Is that good or bad?
Will we seek entertainment rather than information? Will we use consensus information as if it were the same as factual information? Will we do the homework to validate information?
On the other side the coin this provides a great opportunity to sort out a lot of things. The ability to have large segments of population view and review social information will hopefully facilitate wider spread understanding and a teasing out things through more detailed analysis made possible by the communal interaction.
Here it comes….

A so turns the wheel. I am looking forward to this class and the new frontier of the Internet. It seems to be very different than the previous approach and I hope I can hang on to this twist in roller coaster of technology..
