The use of Facebook is the latest way of getting out there. And it’s strength is that it puts us out there to the world. I “is” just like the movies. A virtual image. And like a movie it can be accurate or dressed up or even totally made up. But that’s a old story. Carnivals, stage plays, and just plain play acting have always been a forum for this. And we need that. What’s new is the difficulty in sorting it all out. While in the “old” days when one had all the physical clues from seeing, hearing, touching and even smelling, it can be hard on the internet to get all the information. When am I being entertained and when am I being communicated to. When am I welling to be entertained and when do I want to get down to business. The shear volume of the internet is massive. Even in Facebook we can have hundreds of things confronting us daily. All vying for attention. When and with what material do we form lasting options.
Furthermore what am “I” saying. Do I tell it like “it is” or do I fancy it up a bit. …Maybe just for fun. In the past we dealt in mainly in one to one relationships. Only politicians and actors had the pubic stage. Now anyone can broadcast to the world.
It’s really going to be quantum jump for all of us. In this new world we all will experience the overload. How to discriminate what we see and how do we present what we want us to be. What communication do we want to be involved in. What exchanges do we want to happen. It is said that the computer was going to simplify our lives but it ended up complicating it. That really seems true. The separation between me and us is becoming less. The question is “WHAT DO I WANT TO BE.”
