Facebook…or not…

Posted by: Whitni Suarez | March 9, 2010 | 5 Comments |

I signed up for Facebook a few months ago in order to get extra credit in another class. I did not add any profile information or make it public until now.  I updated my profile with limited information. I decided that after this class is over, I will not be using my Facebook or Twitter profiles/accounts. I do believe that they are both great channels of communication for some people and there is a lot of really good information out there. I like how Hospitals are using Facebook to educate and provide information to their community about healthcare and healthcare events, but I’ve decide that I will stick to email and texting. I typically only talk to one person at a time so I don’t really need the ability to send tweets or post to my wall information meant for anyone or everyone to see (except for this assignment :) ). I would not be opposed to helping my company or a business with updating their Facebook profiles or sending out tweets as an administrator.

Here are the lists I added for Work, Classmates, Family and Friends:

Here is a link to my Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/whitnisuarez

It took a while but I was able to change my username. I kept requesting that  a new confirmation number be texted  to me…I thought it was not working and 3 days later…I got all 5 text messages (hope they are covered under my texting plan :) ).

I set up a Facebook page for a “musician” or in this case a budding musician who gave me permission:

Lindseys Music

I sent out a message to friends notifying them about “Lindsey’s Music” page asking them to become fans.  I also sent a Tweet on Twitter:

I created the following event:
Opening Day for the Santa Ynez Valley Pony League Baseball

And sent out a tweet to promote the event:

Whitni,

I completely understand your sentiment about not using your Facebook or Twitter accounts after this class. I feel the same way about Twitter. I understand that Twitter can be super useful, but I’m not sure I’m in a place where I want to utilize it. I could see perhaps using it later in life if I decide to write a book or if I work for a company that wants me to network using Twitter. I do use Facebook to connect with friends from high school and with others I have met over the years, so I will probably be using that still. It looks like you have got the hang of Facebook though so perhaps you’ll end up liking it by the end of this class :)

Good luck :) – Shala

I had a similar experience setting up my username. It’s still not working. I thought it was just my inexperience with social media. Guess not. I do love meeting friends face to face or communicating one on one. It’s amazing how our lifestyle just does not allow that as much. I belong to two women’s group and it’s a challenge to meet up once a month, but I love it. “Lol” just doesn’t cut it. There’s nothing like experiencing and hearing laughter or tears for that matter. I think social media is important and it’s a great tool. Like any tools, it’s not meant to replace life.

Hi Chien-ei-
When you were trying to update your username, did you add your mobile number? I went to settings, then the “mobile” tab and requested that a confirmation code be sent to me. It did take about 3 days but once I added the code to the site, I now have the ability to go in and change my username again if I want to. I totally agree on the “face to face” communication as opposed to communicating online whenever possible…and besides talking what good is a “virtual glass of wine” :) Good luck!

Thanks, Whitni. I did get it to work–it had something to do with the privacy settings. I guess I need to relax a little bit about those privacy settings.

Good work with the Facebook exercise. The only suggestion for improvement/correction would be to include an image with your Event.
